Glen “The Kid” Marhevka
Please meet our latest featured parent, Glen “The Kid” Marhevka. Glen’s the laid-back, super-likable guy you’re likely to see walking his kids to school frequently down Verdugo road. He’s very committed to making our neighborhood a great place, and we at the school are fortunate to have him spending a lot of his energy there. Though he’s a professional musician, and on the road a lot (if you haven’t heard him play, check out any of the albums from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and pay particular attention to the sweet trumpet playing) yet he still finds time to volunteer for many of the school functions. He is helping out in the classroom weekly (for four years now), and performing at Reading Night with flair! He’s marvelously involved with the Dads’ Club, serving his third year on the board. He’s been involved in one way or another (composing tunes, performing music, acting, teaching the brass band to play, and directing numbers for the Jazz Band) with every production of the Fathers’ Follies since his kids have been at VW. This year, Glen is serving as traffic safety representative at the school, trying to improve the pick-up and drop-off situation.
Tough they don’t have Japanese Heritage, Glen (who lives in the VW boundary) realizes the advantages multilingual abilities bestow on kids, and made the commitment to keep his children in the VWJDL program for the duration. So far, it’s working out great; his daughter Olivia is learning Japanese at a fantastic rate, and hopes to help Dad as a translator on his next gig in Japan!
So say “Hi” to Glen, and let him know you appreciate all he does for VW.
